    This talk presents MediaEval (, an international multimedia benchmark initiative that offers innovative new tasks to the multimedia community. It is open to any research group who signs up to participate. MediaEval sets its focus on social and human aspects of multimedia and also strives to emphasize the ‘multi’ in multimedia, including the use of speech, audio, tags, users, context as well as visual content.

  • Advancements in Social Media Retrieval: How did PetaMedia help?

    This presentation provides a brief overview of the FP7 Network of Excellence (NoE) Peer-to-Peer Tagged Media (PetaMedia). This NoE has been established and conducted with the goal to explore the possibilities for developing advanced solutions for multimedia information retrieval (MIR) in the social network context. PetaMedia has approached the realization of these solutions based on the triple-synergy paradigm.

  • SpudTV Field Trials

    This talk give an overview of the activities of SpudTV, which is a subproject within the EU FP7 project PetaMedia. In SpudTV, we developed methods for implicit tagging of multimedia data based on analysis of users' responses to the data. We focus mainly on the automatic assignment of affective tags based on EEG signals, peripheral physiological signals, and Multimedia Content Analysis. In the talk, several experiments are discussed, results presented and avenues for future work considered.

  • Off the Beaten track-Near2me travel recommender prototype

    This presentation shows Near2me, a prototype system implementing a travel recommender concept that generates recommendations that are not only personalized, but also authentic. Exploitation of implicit situational knowledge makes it possible for Near2me to recommend places that are not necessarily touristic or famous, but rather are genuinely representative of place and also match users’ personal interests. The recommendation system makes use of user photos from the image sharing community Flickr.

  • P2P Video Networking with Social Media Applications (S3MR 2011)

    Video services, user-generated video, and P2P data exchange are major current trends in the Internet. Hence, understanding basics of P2P video transport over the Internet that can ensure some level of quality of experience (QoE) to end-users is essential. To this effect, this talk will cover fundamentals of streaming models and protocols; P2P networking concepts and protocols; very basic video coding; an introduction to P2P video including chunk formation, peer selection and chunk selection; fairness in P2P networking; rate adaptation strategies; definition of quality of experience including rate, distortion, freeze/skip duration, and pre-roll delay. Examples of P2P video streaming applications and solutions, including social media applications, from recent European projects such as P2PNext, SARACEN and DIOMEDES will be provided.
